UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC) is a 310-bed comprehensive medical center caring for families in and around the Baltimore Washington corridor. It provides a range of services and centers of excellence that include the Aiello Breast Center, Pascal Women's Center, Tate Cancer Center, Maryland Vascular Center, emergency care, pediatric care, psychiatric care, Joint Replacement Center, Baltimore Washington Spine and Neuroscience Center, Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine Center, University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology, cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation services, endoscopy services and geriatric services. BWMC is also a Primary Stroke Center.

The independent health care rating organization HealthGrades recently ranked BWMC in the top five percent of America’s hospitals nationwide and U.S. News & World Report ranked BWMC as one of America’s best hospitals for neurology, neurosurgery and digestive disorders.

The Emergency Department is one of the busiest in the state, treating more than 103,000 patients a year. The department features 69 treatment rooms, a designated pediatric care area and a designated psychiatric care area.

The cardiac team at BWMC provides a wide range of services including diagnostic testing, interventional testing in two state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratories and a 24-bed critical care unit. BWMC has also been designated a Cardiac Interventional Center (CIC) by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS).

BWMC provides complete care before, during, and after surgery for patients who need total joint replacement through the Joint Replacement Center, while the Baltimore Washington Spine and Neuroscience Center uses minimally invasive techniques and pain management therapies to provide comprehensive spine care.

The Maryland Vascular Center at BWMC combines the most advanced diagnostic capabilities with a full range of treatment options for vascular conditions, as well as arterial and venous diseases and renovascular hypertension. It also offers renal and endovascular therapy, as well as surgical and non-surgical treatments for varicose veins.

Diabetes care is provided through the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Baltimore Washington Medical Center to meet the growing needs of area residents and to equip them with the knowledge to manage their disease effectively.

BWMC invested more than $8.6 million in 2010 through charity care and its community outreach programs, which include lectures, health fairs, walking programs, screenings and other events held throughout the region.
