UMMC Midtown Campus
For more than a century, University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus (formerly Maryland General Hospital) has served the needs of patients in Baltimore. It was founded by local physicians in 1881 and has always been a teaching hospital.
University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus offers a full spectrum of health care for more than 110,000 individuals annually. In recent years the hospital has experienced substantial growth in admissions, births, emergency room visits, and outpatient visits.
Services include quality, cost-effective care in the following areas: cardiovascular medicine, chemical dependency, dermatology, emergency medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery, hematology, mental health, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology and renal dialysis, nuclear medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, pediatrics, plastic surgery, podiatry, primary care, pulmonary medicine, radiology, rehabilitation, urology, and vascular surgery.
Building on three decades of leadership in managing ear, nose, and throat disorders, the hospital features the Sinus Center for diagnosis and treatment of sinus disorders, nasal endoscopy, and endoscopic sinus surgery. The Center also treats tumors of the head and neck. Because chronic sinus disorders are so debilitating, the Center can evaluate most new patients quickly.
University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus was one of the first in Baltimore to establish an outreach program offering education, prevention, and screening, without which many people would have faced significant barriers to quality, affordable care. Since 1990, the hospital's Community Health Education Center has screened more than 70,000 people at several locations in the Baltimore metropolitan area for prostate cancer, diabetes, tuberculosis, hypertension, and other illnesses. It also operates a free pregnancy-testing program.
Outpatient rehabilitation services are offered at the hospital's primary care center. Just for Kids is a comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facility for children from birth to age 18.
University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus's Family Health Center offers primary and specialty care in a multi-specialty clinic. In more than 20 specialty areas, physicians treat injuries, chronic conditions, and routine and complex medical problems.
Walk-in visits are available in some areas. The center includes a satellite ambulatory arm of the University of Maryland's noted Institute of Human Virology. It offers clinical expertise in virology; access to clinical research trials; and nursing and social work services focused on the needs of individuals with HIV/AIDS and other chronic viral diseases.
