UM Shore Regional Health's commitment to Exceptional Care, Every Day dates back over 100 years. The regional health care network serving Caroline, Dorchester, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties includes the UM Shore Medical Center at Easton, UM Shore Health Medical Center at Dorchester in Cambridge and UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown. Shore Regional Health, which was formed in July of 2013, connects residents and visitors to primary care and specialty physicians, emergency medical services, and a coordinated system of prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Services address the general, emergency and acute care needs of the community, and provide specialized care for heart disease, stroke, cancer, joint replacement, sleep disorders, diabetes education, pain management, breast disease and wound healing.

The Requard Radiation Oncology Center and the Shore Regional Cancer Center offer state-of-the-art oncology services and cancer treatment focused on treating the whole person. Shore Regional Breast Center provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment options and, through a grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Maryland, facilitates community outreach to educate minority women about the importance of regular mammograms.

The Joint Replacement Center has earned national recognition for its quality patient care and outcomes. UM Shore Medical Center at Easton is a designated Primary Stroke Center for the State of Maryland. The Pain Management Center collaborates with primary care and specialty physicians in treating patients experiencing acute and chronic pain.

Cardiac care consists of a full range of services to diagnose chest pain, shortness of breath and other symptoms of heart disease. Cardiac catheterization is performed in a new facility at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton. Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP®), a course of non-invasive treatment designed to increase the flow of blood to the heart by creating "bypasses" around narrowed or blocked arteries, is also available at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton.

UM Shore Health CardioPulmonary Fitness and Wellness program serves Mid-Shore residents through centers at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton and UM Shore Medical Center at Dorchester. Certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, the medically supervised program of exercise and lifestyle modification begins in the hospital following a cardiac event and continues through ongoing maintenance.

The Vascular Center brings together several medical disciplines.

The Regional Sleep Disorders Center located at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton conducts sleep studies, which assist physicians in diagnosing conditions that contribute to unhealthy sleep patterns affecting a patient’s overall well-being.

Shore Rehabilitation Services offers comprehensive physical, occupational and speech therapy at both hospitals and extends care through outpatient centers around the region and at the Center for Integrative Medicine. The Requard Center for Acute Rehabilitation is the Mid-Shore’s only facility where inpatients are inspired to regain hope and independence and achieve their optimum level of function following trauma, injury or disease.

Shore Home Health and Hospice builds a bridge between the hospitals and outpatient services for individuals and their families.

Staying ahead of the demand for top-notch nurses is a priority for UM Shore Health. UM Shore Medical Center at Easton is home to the Chesapeake College School of Nursing. Both hospitals provide opportunities for clinical training for nursing students. Following graduation, nurses prepare for careers in emergency medicine, surgical nursing, and other specialty areas by attending Critical Care University or Graduate University, nationally acclaimed programs designed and delivered by experienced nurses.

State-of-the-art imaging services are available at both hospitals and at outpatient centers in Easton, Cambridge, Denton and Centreville. Digital images produced through MRI, CT and other digital devices are accessible within minutes anywhere in the world, helping physicians make quick and accurate treatment decisions. UM Shore Medical Center at Easton has added PET/CT as an additional tool for determining the appropriate course of care for many forms of cancer.

In the OR, sophisticated brain and spine surgery is performed with image-guided surgical navigational equipment usually found only at academic medical centers. Minimally invasive procedures are performed at both hospitals for a wide range of medical conditions. An ambulatory surgery center offers convenience for patients who are able to return home or to work following surgery.

UM Shore Health collaborates with other health care providers and social service agencies to ensure that underserved individuals gain access to medical care. One such collaboration, the Children’s Advocacy Center located at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton, brings together a multi-disciplinary team of medical, human services and law enforcement professionals to investigate and prosecute cases of child abuse while supporting children and their non-offending family members.

Staff and physicians present free educational programs for the community, such as labor and delivery classes led by nurses from the Birthing Center. Nurses and social workers lead support groups that help patients and their families manage diabetes, cancer, and other diseases. The popular "Ask the Doctor" series and regular community forums cover a host of topics such as arthritis, breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and stroke.


UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown

University of Maryland Medical Center at Chestertown is 41-bed acute care community hospital providing inpatient medical services, 24-hour emergency care, inpatient and same-day surgical services outpatient diagnostic services (including endoscopy and 3-D digital mammography with tomosynthesis), lab testing with the full range of radiological modalities, and oncology services.

The Emergency Department serves more than 14,000 visitors per year. This fall, construction will begin for the renovation and expansion of the Emergency Department. The goals of this project are to increase patient privacy, enhance treatment of behavioral health issues, centralize the nursing station, and update technology to provide state-of-the-art emergency care. As the fourth and final phase of a $4.3 million project (including the creation of a new entrance and lobby and the installation of two new elevators), the renovation and expansion of the Emergency Department is supported by grant of $900,000 from the State of Maryland.

UM Medical Center at Chestertown’s surgical services suite accommodates same-day and inpatient surgical services, including colon-rectal, general, gynecological, ophthalmology, oral, orthopedic, otolaryngology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, podiatry, thoracic, urology and vascular procedures.

UM Medical Center at Chestertown also offers comprehensive cardiac and pulmonary and diagnostic and treatment services. Its Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services Department, which is is accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, offers Phase I, II, III and IV of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.

UM Shore Medical Center at Dorchester

University of Maryland Medical Center at Dorchester is a 41-bed adult medical/surgical community hospital, providing 24-hour emergency services and inpatient services including medical, surgical, gynecological, orthopedic, acute rehabilitation, behavioral health and critical care. The hospital’s primary service area is Dorchester County; its secondary service area includes Caroline and Talbot counties. More than 17,000 visits to the Emergency Department are recorded every year.

University of Maryland Medical Center at Dorchester provides a full-array of diagnostic and therapeutic services, including same-day surgery and lab testing. Diagnostic imaging services include digital mammography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear medicine as well as cardiovascular and pulmonary testing.

In 2013, the completion of a $2.5 million dollar renovation and expansion of the hospital’s Shore Behavioral Health unit increased the number of beds from 16 to 24, enhancing its ability to meet the needs of patients who have mental health and substance abuse issues.

UM Shore Medical Center at Dorchester also offers a Center for Cardio-Pulmonary Fitness and Wellness, and a sleep testing facilities for overnight studies conducted by Shore Regional Health’s Sleep Center.

Comprehensive rehabilitation services provided by UM Medical Center at Dorchester include the Balance Center, which offers the most advanced technology created for the evaluation and treatment of balance issues. Rehab therapists in the Balance Center assist patients recovering from a wide variety of illness and injury, including stroke, vestibular disorders, chronic imbalance, Parkinson’s, peripheral neuropathy, joint replacement, multiple sclerosis, and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which is estimated to affect 50 percent of adults over age 70. Other rehabilitation services offered in Dorchester include speech, occupational and physical therapy.

UM Shore Medical Center at Easton

With 132 licensed beds, University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton serves primarily Caroline, Dorchester, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties; its secondary service area includes Kent County. Its Emergency Department serves as many as 40,000 patients a year.

Inpatient services span a broad range of primary and secondary inpatient acute care services, including acute and outpatient rehabilitation; medical and surgical; neurosurgical, obstetrical/gynecological; pediatrics; oncology; renal; neuroscience; and critical care.

UM Shore Medical Center at Easton is designated as a primary stroke center from the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System (MIEMSS) and has earned the Gold Plus Award from the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Association (ASA).

The Requard Center for Acute Rehabilitation at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton is a 20-bed “hospital within a hospital.” Requard staff members provide acute nursing care, medical supervision by specially trained physicians, and a comprehensive program of physical, occupational and speech therapy for adults recovering from injuries, surgery and illnesses.

UM Shore Medical Center at Easton also provides a full array of diagnostic and therapeutic inpatient and outpatient services, including comprehensive imaging services, laboratory testing, same-day surgery, and neurological, and cardiovascular and pulmonary diagnostic testing and treatment. Its Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services, offering Phases II and III of cardiac and pulmonary rehab, are accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Diagnostic imaging services include the most advanced technology available using digital mammography, computed tomography (CT), positron emisson tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine and interventional radiology.

The Edward B. and Mildred H. Freeman Outpatient Center at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton, located at the hospital’s entrance for outpatient and surgical services, is the headquarters for the Shore Comprehensive Pain Care clinic and the infusion center. UM Shore Medical Center at Easton is also home to the Center for Cardio-Pulmonary Fitness and Wellness, the Joint Replacement Center, the Regional Sleep Disorders Center, the Wound Healing Center, the University of Maryland Diabetes and Endocrinology Center, the Kidney Transplant Clinic and the Dialysis Vascular Access Clinic.
