BALTIMORE – As Medicare open enrollment season begins, the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) today announced that the acquisition of Timonium, Md.-based Riverside Health, Inc. has been completed following approval by the Maryland Insurance Administration. Beginning October 15, 2015, the University of Maryland Health Advantage Plan will be offered to those enrolled in Medicare only and those enrolled in both Medicaid and Medicare for the 2016 plan year.

“We are excited to bring Riverside Health’s success in providing access to care to the UMMS family with new plan options as we further our mission to serve Maryland as a comprehensive health care provider,” says Robert A. Chrencik, University of Maryland Medical System’s president and chief executive officer.

The University of Maryland Health Advantage Plan will provide services beyond traditional Medicaid and Medicare fee-for-service plans. The plan also will provide beneficiaries with access to a large local physician and hospital network, and will help the system and its hospitals reduce costs associated with avoidable re-admissions and coordinate care by linking patients to community resources.

“The plan is designed to empower members to better manage their health, including partnering with their care team to achieve the best health outcomes possible, as well as helping physicians improve efficiency during office visits,” says Chrencik. “Plans include all-in-one coverage - medical, hospital and prescription coverage - as well as provide extra benefits to help individuals better manage their health.”

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved a service area for the University of Maryland Health Advantage Plan that includes Baltimore City as well as Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Dorchester, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties.

“The University of Maryland Health Advantage Plan will promote strong provider–patient relationships through supportive care management strategies and innovative uses of technology,” said Mark Puente, president and chief executive officer, University of Maryland Medical System Health Plans, which was formerly known as Riverside Health, Inc.

There will be two Maryland Health Advantage plans: Complete, open to individuals with both Medicare Part A (hospital and post-acute care services) & Part B (physician and outpatient services), and Dual, open to beneficiaries with both Medicare Part A & Part B and Medicaid (Maryland Medical Assistance).

The Dual plan includes additional benefits such as transportation and meals for patients following discharge from a hospital stay.  Members of the Dual plan will also receive comprehensive nursing support including face-to-face and over-the-phone assessments between medical appointments, care and medication compliance monitoring, referral management and coordination, and education on symptoms and early warning signs specific to their conditions.

Specific details of plan benefits can be found online at www.UMMedicareAdvantage.org or by calling the prospective enrollment call center at 1-844-262-1122.  The annual enrollment period is October 15 through December 7.
