The Joint Replacement Center at UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center believes education is a critical part of patient outcomes. The more prepared and educated a patient is, the more they will be able to play an active role in their care and recovery. Below are some resources to help our joint replacement patients.

Joint School

Our experienced orthopaedic nurse practitioners host an educational program called Joint School for all of our joint replacement patients. This is a class that all hip and knee replacement patients, and their family members or a loved one, will take prior to their surgery. Our nurse practitioners detail every aspect of the patient journey, including:

  • Preparing for surgery, setting up your home, and pre-testing
  • Pre-operation exercises and lifestyle changes, known as pre-habilitation
  • What to expect the day of surgery and during your hospital stay
  • Pain management and immediate recovery
  • Discharge planning
  • What to expect at home in the weeks after surgery

All patients who undergo their joint replacement surgery at UM BWMC will be encouraged to participate in Joint School. Please ask your orthopaedic surgeon for more information about this class. Watch a recorded session of Joint School.

Our nurse practitioners and physicians have put together a list of frequently asked questions they receive from patients and their families during appointments and at the Joint School class. View our total joint replacement FAQs.
