Diabetes Education and Counseling
Whether you have been newly diagnosed with diabetes or you have been living with it your entire life, you want to have the latest information on the management of your disease. Our outpatient education and counseling are offered at University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center.
The Diabetes Self-Management Program meets the national standards for diabetes self-management education earning recognition by the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (formerly AADE). Diabetes educators work with you and your provider to create a plan that includes detailed and important information resulting in greater understanding of diabetes and its complications.
A physician referral is necessary for patients taking diabetes education or nutrition classes. All diabetes management and nutrition services are offered by appointment only.
The diabetes education and nutrition program includes:
- Annual follow-up
- Basic diabetes survival skills
- Basic meal planning
- Carbohydrate counting
- Diabetes self-management classes
- Gestational diabetes nutrition
- Weight management
- Cardiac nutrition (Heart Healthy)
- Insulin medication therapy
- Insulin pump therapy
- One-on-one counseling
We accept most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Most insurance plans provide a benefit for this diabetes education program.
