Total knee replacement (also known as total knee arthroplasty) is an effective treatment for chronic and debilitating knee arthritis.

In a total knee replacement, metal is used to cap the ends of the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia). An advanced plastic insert is then placed between the metal parts to replace the arthritic joint. This way, the damaged surfaces are replaced while leaving the majority of the bone around the knee intact.

Knee replacements at UM Capital Region Health are performed with muscle-sparing, tissue-sparing approaches together with multiple options for your pain control regimen. This allows patients to walk the same day of surgery. Medically suitable patients are eligible to go home later the same day.
