Newborn in NICU

Exceptional Care for High-Risk Mothers and Newborns

UM Capital Region Health operates the only Level III NICU in Prince George's County. Our dedicated team is specialty-trained to care for premature, ill and recovering newborns.

A Center for Prince George’s County

As a Level III Perinatal Referral Center, area hospitals and clinics can refer mothers with high-risk pregnancies to be cared for by our Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists. This designation by the state of Maryland allows us to provide specialized, high-quality care for high-risk mothers and their newborns in one location.

We care for infants born prematurely, who have low birth weight or a critical illness. We also accept infants from other hospitals that require a higher level of care.

Family-Centered Care

As a parent, you are an essential member of your baby’s health care team. We encourage you to ask questions, collaborate with our specialists and be actively involved in your baby’s care. Our NICU is open 24 hours a day for parents, allowing you to be present with your newborn at any time.

Please contact the NICU for visitation policy details for all other visitors – including NICU infant siblings.

Support for Nursing Mothers

Our lactation support team offers guidance, answer your questions, and help you navigate challenges you may encounter during nursing.

Each baby’s room is equipped with a hospital-grade breast pump, making it convenient for you to express milk while staying close to your little one.

To support your breastfeeding journey after you leave the hospital, we provide each NICU mother with a personal breast pump to take home, ensuring you have the resources you need.

When It's Time to Go Home

As your baby transitions from our NICU to home, our dedicated team ensures that you feel confident and knowledgeable in caring for your little one. We provide comprehensive support on key topics, including:

  • Feeding/Lactation Services: Receive guidance on breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, and establishing a feeding routine for you and your baby. Our board-certified lactation consultants help you navigate breastfeeding and pumping at home, providing the resources you need for a successful experience.
  • Bathing: Understand the best practices for bathing your newborn safely and comfortably.
  • Administration of Medications: Learn how to administer any prescribed medications to your baby safely.
  • Car Seat Safety: Understand the proper use and installation of car seats to ensure a safe journey home.
  • Infant CPR: Gain essential skills through our Infant CPR training to prepare for any emergencies.

We are committed to equipping you with the knowledge and skills necessary for a smooth transition home.
