Surgical Options

UM Capital Region Health provides expertise in many surgical subspecialties to residents in Prince George’s County and surrounding communities, including:

  • Endoscopy: A procedure performed using a tube with a lens at one end and a video camera at the other. This allows physicians to examine inside of the body without performing a full surgery.
  • Open surgery: Surgeons make incisions large enough to see the entire surgery area and perform the required procedure.
  • Minimally invasive surgery: Surgeons use incisions along with small instruments and a camera to perform surgery. The camera is inserted into one incision and tiny operating instruments are inserted through the other.

UM Capital Region Health offers two types of minimally invasive surgical procedures including:
    • Laparoscopic surgery
Surgeons perform laparoscopic surgery using special long-handled instruments while viewing magnified images from the laparoscope (camera) on a video screen.
    • Robotic-assisted surgery
Surgeons perform laparoscopic surgery with robot-assistance, which allows for 3-D vision, improved hand dexterity and precise control through tiny incisions.

*Robotic-assisted surgery may not be suitable for all patients. Your physician will determine a treatment plan that is right for you.
