Sherry B. Perkins, PhD, RN, FAAN, President and CEO of University of Maryland Capital Region Health, announced that she will be stepping down from her role, effective July 6. Perkins will be relocating to Delaware where she has accepted a new position in healthcare.
Perkins has served as President and CEO as well as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of UM Capital Region Health. She joined the organization in 2016 after the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) convened a search committee and engaged a national search firm to identify executives to lead the organization.
"It has been an honor serving the Prince George's County community and working with the physicians and team members in addressing the health care needs of the County and surrounding region," says Perkins. "I am leaving the organization knowing it has a bright future ahead with a new hospital scheduled to open in 2021. I also look forward to continuing my career, having a positive impact on patient care, which is the hallmark of my professional career."
Perkins has spent more than 20 years in the Maryland healthcare sector dedicating her career to focusing on patients, families, and all those who take care of them.
Prior to joining UM Capital Region Health, Perkins held executive leadership roles with the Anne Arundel Health System. From 1991-2006, Perkins had an earlier track record of success as a clinical leader with the University of Maryland Medical System, having held roles of increasing responsibility at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where she ultimately served as Vice President for Patient Care Services and Clinical Effectiveness.
"We thank Dr. Perkins for her leadership and commitment to UM Capital Region Health, says UMMS Interim President and CEO, UMMS John Ashworth. "Dr. Perkins is an accomplished clinician and hospital executive with a sharp focus on patient care, quality and safety. She was instrumental in the merger of UM Capital and UMMS and we wish her the very best in her future endeavors."
Ashworth will be working with the UM Capital Region Health Board of Directors and Perkins to name an interim replacement to lead the organization until a national search is complete and a permanent successor is named.
