Pharmacy Residency

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

The UM Capital Region Medical Center is an acute care teaching hospital and a regional referral center.

We are also a level 2 trauma center- second highest volume in the state of Maryland. We are known to have the fewest barriers to patient care of any hospital in our region.

We provide clinical services in various areas including critical care, trauma, cardiac surgery, emergency medicine and women/infant care. Our new regional medical center is set to open spring 2021.

Purpose

The PGY1 pharmacy residency builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Our program offer residents the opportunity to advance their skills and knowledge in patient care and pharmacy operational services and to further the development of leadership skills that can be applied in various practice settings. This residency offers the opportunity to learn and practice pharmaceutical care in various acute care settings such as critical care, emergency medicine and internal medicine. Residents will have the opportunity to work and learn alongside with medical residents. Residents will also have experiences in medication safety and pharmacy administration.

Focused and personalized needs are also incorporated into each resident's program goals. While all residents are required to complete rotations in core areas that are considered to be essential to the pharmacy practitioner, elective rotations are available to provide the resident flexibility in pursuing individual goals and interests. Upon successful completion of all program requirements and compliance with all conditions of the residency program, the resident will be awarded a certificate indicating successful completion of the residency.
