UM Charles Regional Medical Center’s neurology team treats disorders affecting the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, muscles, nerves and blood vessels.

Neurological disorders occur when there is a structural, biochemical or electrical problem in the nervous system. When this happens, there are a range of different symptoms you may experience. Neurological disorders can affect your intelligence, memory, senses, body movement or behavior, and significantly impact your quality of life.

Neurological Conditions We Treat

Our neurology program can help diagnose, treat, and manage many conditions, including:

  • Headaches or migraines – head pain, sometimes extreme, that may also bring nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, dizziness and more
  • Stroke – caused by a clot or rupture in a blood vessel that prevents blood flow to the brain
  • Parkinson's disease – a brain disorder causing movement problems, stiffness and tremors
  • Tremor – involuntary shaking or trembling
  • Memory loss or dementia – impairment of brain functions, such as judgment
  • Epilepsy or seizures – changes in the brain's electrical activity that cause abnormal behavior and movement
  • Multiple sclerosis – a disease in which the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerves
  • Pseudotumor – when pressure inside the skull increases for no obvious reason; also called "false tumor"
  • Neuropathy – numbness, tingling, pain, swelling or muscle weakness
  • Trigeminal neuralgia – intense pain attacks in the face, coming from the trigeminal nerve
  • Myasthenia gravis – an autoimmune condition causing muscle weakness, commonly affecting the eyes/eyelids, facial expressions and swallowing/speaking
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome – when the immune system attacks nerves, causing pain, weakness and paralysis
  • Radiculopathy – a pinched nerve in the spine
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – muscle weakness, stiffness and cramping that leads to the loss of voluntary movement; also known as Lou Gehrig's disease
  • Movement disorders – disruptions in voluntary or involuntary body movements
  • Neuromuscular diseases – conditions that affect the muscles and their nervous system control

We also evaluate symptoms such as dizziness, loss of balance and syncope (fainting).

Services We Provide

We conduct diagnostic testing, including an EEG (electroencephalogram) to test electrical activity in the brain and detect epilepsy, brain tumors and more. We also provide Botox (for chronic migraines ONLY).

Stroke Treatment and Recovery

UM Charles Regional Medical Center is a Certified Primary Stroke Center, providing the level of effort and specialized care needed to foster the best outcomes for stroke patients. We partner with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel to provide life-saving treatment to people who experience a stroke. As part of our commitment to stroke patients and survivors, we offer several outreach programs to support the recovery process.
