LA PLATA, Md. (July 22, 2024) – The University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System, announces the newest addition to its Primary Care team, Smriti Sharma, MSN, NP.

Working with Lorenzo Childress, MD, at our UM Charles Regional Medical Group’s Primary Care office in La Plata, Sharma is now seeing patients to help treat a wide range of health issues affecting teens and adults, as well as manage chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

"We are fortunate to have a top-notch nurse practitioner like Smriti Sharma join our primary care team in La Plata. Her diverse experience and compassionate nature will provide Charles County with another high-quality health care provider alongside Dr. Childress and nurse practitioner Adwoa Amponsah-Poku, who treats patients in our Bryans Road office,” said Evalyne Bryant Ward, CAPPM, MBA, DBA, Director of Operations for UM Charles Regional Medical Group.

Sharma became a registered nurse at the College of Medical Sciences in Chitwan, Nepal, in 2004 where she worked as a staff nurse for eight years. For the last 10 years she has worked as a registered nurse at hospitals and senior care facilities in Delaware, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Kansas, with a three-month volunteer stint in Nepal late last year. She recently earned board certification as a nurse practitioner and a Master of Science in Nursing degree in adult-gerontology primary care at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

“I am dedicated to improving health care outcomes through an evidence-based practice and working with my patients to improve their quality of life,” Sharma said.
