Austin DeMoss Janaitis, MGC

Austin Janaitis is a prenatal genetic counselor. She joined the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) in 2016.

Janaitis offers comprehensive prenatal genetic counseling services in the Center for Advanced Fetal Care at UMMC. She discusses appropriate screening and diagnostic options with patients who have various concerns about having a child with a birth defect or genetic condition due to factors such as:

• Abnormal ultrasound and other screening results
• Advanced maternal age
• Family history of a genetic disorder
• Medication use during pregnancy

In addition to being a counselor, Janaitis participates in the education and clinical supervision of master’s in genetic counseling students as well as residents, fellows and medical students. She is an instructor at University of Maryland School of Medicine. Her special interests include whole exome and whole genome sequencing (methods used in health care and research to identify genetic variations) and medical record documentation of genetic testing.
