About Me

Dr. Nichols is a radiation oncologist who treats a variety of cancers. She specializes in women's cancers, namely breast and gynecologic malignancies. She is the chair of the GammaPod Consortium, a community of medical institutions dedicated to research with the GammaPod, a device developed at the University of Maryland for treating early-stage breast cancers.

Dr. Nichols has extensive experience using proton therapy to treat advanced or recurring breast cancers and in combining this treatment with hyperthermia. She is also experienced in treating patients with brachytherapy, proton therapy and photon therapy.

Dr. Nichols is vice chair of clinical affairs at the University of Maryland Department of Radiation Oncology. She received her undergraduate education at Duke University (Durham, North Carolina), followed by medical school at the University of Maryland. Her internship and residency in radiation oncology were also completed at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Nichols' research interests focus on the use of the GammaPod in the treatment of early-stage breast cancers; the use of pre-operative partial breast irradiation in the treatment of early-stage breast cancers; and the use of proton therapy in the management of breast cancers. She also performs clinical research on a variety of gynecologic malignancies, including the use of radiation therapy in the management of uterine carcinosarcoma.

In 2020, Dr. Nichols was named "Physician of the Year" by The Daily Record. In addition, she has been named a "Top Doctor" in the specialty of radiation oncology on multiple occasions by Baltimore Magazine.
