Esther Kim Liu, MD, FAAP

Dr. Liu has been passionate about children’s health and safety since she began pursuing her dream of becoming a pediatrician. She believes that ensuring families have access to reliable and relevant information is an important responsibility of those in the medical field.

Dr. Liu is chair of pediatrics and director of group-based care at University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC), where she oversees the pediatric emergency room, special care nursery, inpatient pediatric unit and award-winning group-based pediatric primary care practice. She joined the UM BWMC team in 2009.

A treasured colleague, Dr. Liu has previously been voted by her UM BWMC peers as "Physician of the Year." She also has won multiple other nursing and patient recognition awards for her exceptional service and display of compassion and respect in providing care. She was a Baltimore Business Journal “40 under 40” honoree in the “best and brightest of Greater Baltimore” category and is consistently recognized among Chesapeake Family Life magazine's annual “Favorite Doctor” honorees. She has made a number of TV and radio appearances and been featured in numerous online and print articles as a pediatric health expert. She is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society of Hospital Medicine. She also serves on multiple local and state committees tasked with ensuring children’s safety and health.

Dr. Liu credits her incredibly supportive husband for giving her the foundation she needs to dedicate herself to her profession and her two children for always keeping her humble as only children can do. She loves spending time with her children, as they remind her of the joy and wonder that can be found in day-to-day life. She has been homeschooling her children since kindergarten.

When she is not spending time with her family, working or volunteering, Dr. Liu enjoys channeling her inner spirit animal, the sloth.
