About Me

A neurosurgeon and clinician-scientist, Dr. Woodworth specializes in the treatment of brain tumors, image-guided therapies and focused ultrasound treatments. He has particular interests in:

  • Glioma and metastatic tumor surgery with awake brain mapping
  • MRI-guided focused ultrasound (Magus)
  • Vestibular Schwannoma/Acoustic Neuroma surgery/radiosurgery
  • Pituitary Tumor Surgery (combined microscopic/endoscopic)
  • Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT)
  • Cranial reconstruction

In the brain tumor program at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Woodworth and his team care for patients with tumors in and around the brain and spinal cord. They look to innovates new treatment for brain-invading tumor cells in both primary and metastatic brain tumors. They also focus on treating disorders of cerebrospinal fluid flow such as hydrocephalus.

Dr. Woodworth and his team take a personalized approach to care. Working closely with experts in the areas of radiology, anesthesiology, critical care medicine, electrophysiology, neurology and rehabilitation, they strive for surgical and clinical excellence in serving the needs of each patient. They fight for each patient, offering hope even in the direst situations. Because Dr. Woodworth and his team collaborate with experts in many different fields, they are able to examine each patient's condition from different angles and carefully consider new or alternative approaches to achieve the best outcome. They are leading the development of new technologies to improve outcomes through less invasive approaches such as MRI-guided focused ultrasound.

In addition, Dr. Woodworth and his team are leading clinical trials designed to develop and study focused ultrasound for the treatment of numerous neurological disorders, including blood-brain barrier opening for enhanced therapeutic delivery to brain tumors.

While it was a deep interest in clinical science and research and a desire to improve human health that led him to study medicine, it was the personal interactions he had with patients with complex neurosurgical problems that inspired Dr. Woodworth to become a neurosurgeon. He saw how quickly action and the ability to solve problems could save a patient's life and decided he wanted to help patients by focusing on neurosurgical techniques and improving his understanding of neurological structure and function.

Dr. Woodworth is professor and chair of neurosurgery at University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). For completing his neurosurgical training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and growing the brain tumor research program at UMSOM, he received scientific innovation honors from the Focused Ultrasound Foundation (the Galbraith Award) and Johns Hopkins Neurosurgery (the Alumni Achievement Award). He was named a 2022 "Top Doctor" in the specialty of Neurosurgery by Baltimore magazine.

Dr. Woodworth is a member of the following professional associations and societies:

  • American Board of Neurological Surgeons
  • American Association of Neurological Surgeons
  • American College of Surgeons
