About Me
A general psychiatrist, Dr. RachBeisel specializes in treating adults with serious and persistent mental illness (including anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], depression, psychosis and schizophrenia) and substance use disorders. She has a special interest in women's mental health that includes a focus on early diagnosis and supporting healthy family growth leading to healthier communities.
Dr. RachBeisel is the Irving J. Taylor professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). She is also chief of psychiatry at University of Maryland Medical Center. Her commitment to urban communities and residents struggling with poverty, health care disparities and violence led her to join the Department of Psychiatry at UMSOM.
Since the start of her career, Dr. RachBeisel has gravitated to the development of clinical programs driven by evidence-based, scientifically established interventions serving those most in need of mental health care. She has established a person-centered, trauma-informed approach to care that involves meeting individuals where they are and shared decision-making.
During her training, Dr. RachBeisel received multiple awards, including the Burrows Welcome Fellowship for Outstanding Community Outreach and the Eugene Brody Award for outstanding psychotherapy. She is an established clinical scientist and educator with a strong administrative and leadership focus.
A well-established leader in mental health care in Maryland, Dr. RachBeisel was named one of Maryland's Top Women for 2021 by The Daily Record.
