About Me
Dr. Joseph R. Murphy received his M.D. from the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University in 1983 and performed his internal medicine training from 1983 to 1986 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
After a three-year stint as an internal medicine specialist with the Army in Frankfurt, Germany, Dr. Murphy returned to Walter Reed for subspecialty training in gastroenterology from 1989 to 1991. He continued at Walter Reed as a staff gastroenterologist until 1993 when he entered private practice.
Dr. Murphy is with the UM Charles Regional Medical Group and cares for patients at his offices in La Plata and Waldorf, and the hospital's new endoscopy center at the UM Charles Regional Medical Pavilion in La Plata. Read below to learn more about Dr. Murphy's commitment to his patients.
Why did you choose a career in your particular specialty?
Gastroenterology allows me to work with patients concerning their medical issues as well as do endoscopic procedures allowing a diverse assortment of skills in my medical practice.
What types of conditions do your patients have?
My patients have esophageal issues such as reflux, stomach issues such as ulcers, intestinal issues such as Crohns disease, colon issues such as cancer or polyps, liver issues such as cirrhosis, and pancreas issues such as pancreatitis.
Do you specialize in any particular procedures?
At our Endoscopy Center, I perform both upper endoscopies and colonoscopies as well as hemorrhoid treatments.

Our patients will find a skilled, compassionate, and experienced gastroenterologist to care for their gastrointestinal needs when they come to my practice.
How would you describe your philosophy of care for your patients?
My philosophy is simple: to be patient-oriented and to do whatever is necessary to care for my patients.
Have you received any major awards? Do you belong to any medical societies?
I have received the Physician Recognition Award, and I am a fellow in both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Gastroenterology as well as a member of the Endoscopic Society of Gastroenterology.
