About Me

Dr. Crino is a neurologist and an epileptologist. His specialty is epilepsy. He has particular expertise in treating patients diagnosed with intractable epilepsy, a condition in which one's seizures can't be completely controlled by medications, making them possible candidates for epilepsy surgery.

Dr. Crino also sees adult patients with autism and intellectual disabilities. He has a particular interest in neurogenetic disorders, those that cause abnormal brain development and function.

Dr. Crino has previously been named a "Top Doctor" in the specialty of epilepsy by Baltimore magazine.

Before his appointment to chairman of the Department of Neurology at University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Crino was professor and vice-chair for research at Temple University School of Medicine's Shriners Hospital Pediatric Research Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Over the last 20 years, Dr. Crino's lab has received continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health, including four grants totaling $4.1 million. He has co-authored 151 peer-reviewed manuscripts, chapters, and reviews. He has been invited to lecture all over the world.

Dr. Crino is an internationally recognized physician-scientist specializing in developmental brain disorders. His laboratory has researched mechanisms of altered brain development associated with autism, intellectual disability and epilepsy. His laboratory has focused on defining developmental disorders associated with intractable epilepsy including autism, hemimegalencephaly, focal cortical dysplasia and tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), which Dr. Crino has studied extensively.

Dr. Crino has collaborated on identifying several new genes associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. He has also pioneered single-cell mRNA and DNA sequencing analysis in resected human tissues. In addition, he has used mouse models to explore the effects of mTOR regulatory genes on cell development in vitro models using immunocytochemistry, Western and mRNA expression analyses, gene transfection, and in vitro cell migration assessments.
