About Me

Dr. McAvoy treats cancer of any site in the body. She has special interests in women's health; treating breast and gynecologic cancers; and treatment of brain, spine and thoracic tumors.

Dr. McAvoy specializes in various advanced radiation therapies, including brachytherapy, stereotactic body radiation therapy, GammaPod (a form of breast cancer treatment available at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center) and proton therapy (available at the Maryland Proton Treatment Center). She also specializes in palliative radiation oncology.

Dr. McAvoy's research focus has been on breast cancer, glioblastoma, thoracic radiation, reirradiation and normal tissue toxicity. She spent several years conducting research in the area of genomic instability in cancer at Mayo Clinic. She has written numerous peer-reviewed publications and given many national presentations on her work.

Dr. McAvoy is an assistant professor of radiation oncology at University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she is also director of the Radiation Oncology Residency Program. She received her medical degree from University of Minnesota School of Medicine in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She completed her residency training in radiation oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, where she was chief resident and received the Dr. Mary Fletcher Award for excellence in clinical care.
