Infusion Therapy
At convenient locations throughout Maryland, including in your home, University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) provides a wide range of infusion therapy services.
We bring care directly to you (home infusion therapy) or offer it at a hospital, infusion suite or other onsite clinic near where you live. In each setting, infusion care coordinated by a diverse team of physicians, nurses, and pharmacy providers is tailored to your needs for a positive patient experience and whole-person care.
In continuing to expand our infusion therapy services, we focus on regularly improving:
- Access to care (including affordability)
- Patient comfort
- Convenience
- Patient safety

What Is Infusion Therapy?
Infusion therapy involves delivering medications or nutrients directly into the patient’s bloodstream by way of a needle or catheter (flexible, plastic tube placed through the skin and into a vein). It is an outpatient treatment often performed when patients cannot take oral medication or oral medication doesn’t appear to be working.
Infusion therapy is used to treat many short- and long-term conditions, including:
- Cancer
- Congestive heart failure
- Dehydration
- Immune system deficiencies
- Infections
- Multiple sclerosis

- Anti-inflammatory therapies (for chronic inflammatory conditions such as HIV and rheumatoid arthritis)

What to Expect
No matter if you’re receiving infusion therapy in your home or at one of our in-person locations, we ensure your treatment is as comfortable, convenient and safe as possible. We will work with your care team to help you achieve your health goals. Treatments are planned according to your provider’s orders and what's covered by your insurance.
The length of your treatment, as well as the type, will depend on your condition. Because infusion therapy is done on an outpatient basis, your medical costs are lower and you will spend less time in a hospital or other care facility.
