Clinical Instructor Requirements and Application
University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) bedside nurses can inspire and educate the next generation of nurses by being a paid clinical instructor for the UMMS Academy of Clinical Essentials (ACE).
Instructor Responsibilities
- Teach essential nursing skills as outlined by the school of nursing in your own unit or another unit at your respective UMMS hospital (excluding ICUs)
- Supervise a group of 2–6 med/surg nursing students during clinical rotations for one shift per week
- Complete a brief student evaluation each week (5–10 minutes in total)

- Receive paid clinical instructor training for all new clinical instructors
Program Requirements
- Time commitment is typically one, 12.5-hour shift per week
- Your ACE clinical shift can be part of your current work requirement or in addition to (pending your manager's approval)
- ACE clinical shift must be the same day each week (can be a day, night or weekend shift)
- Clinical rotations are offered in the fall, spring and summer semesters for 4–13 weeks
Instructor Requirements
- BSN degree holder currently working at the bedside and able to take a full patient assignment on the unit
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in nursing
- Prior teaching experience preferred but not required
- Earn a rating of "competent" or better on most recent performance evaluation
- New clinical instructors must attend a 1–2 day paid clinical instructor training course prior to the beginning of the semester
