What to Expect at the ER: Our priority is to treat each person in our emergency rooms as fully, safely and quickly as possible. We see patients based on how serious their conditions are. Patients are not seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Learn more about what to expect at the ER.
Emergency Stroke Care
We are designated by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) as a primary stroke center for rapid treatment that meets or exceeds national standards for stroke care and supports favorable patient outcomes.
Emergency Heart Care
We provide immediate, expert care for most heart emergencies.
Patients suffering an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a type of heart attack that poses a greater risk of serious complications, need what is called an emergency catheterization. If it is determined a patient needs an emergency catheterization, they will be transferred to an UMMS Designated Cardiac Interventional Center (DCIC).
The closest DCIC is UMMC Downtown Campus. UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center, UM St. Joseph Medical Center and UM Upper Chesapeake Medical Center are also DCICs.
Emergency Mental Health Care
We treat patients of all ages for mental health crises. Our team-based approach to meeting these patients’ unique needs involves expertise from specialists in psychiatry, social work, psychiatric nursing and chemical dependency in making diagnoses and determining treatments.
Although we provide emergency psychiatric treatment to all patients, we cannot admit minors to the hospital for inpatient stays. Once stabilized, pediatric patients needing a higher level of care or inpatient admission are transferred to an appropriate facility for those services.
Our emergency psychiatric services include:
- Psychiatric evaluations
- Inpatient admission (for adult patients as needed)
- Crisis intervention
- Referrals for ongoing mental health and other care services
- Outpatient detox services (withdrawal management for substance use disorders, provided by referral only in conjunction with enrollment in an intensive treatment program)
Pediatric Emergency Care
We can see pediatric patients of any age — from newborns to adolescents — for emergency conditions. Our emergency medicine specialists are trained to meet the immediate and unique medical needs of children. If these patients need a higher level of care or an inpatient stay, they are transferred to the pediatric emergency department at UMMC Downtown Campus, which treats patients ages birth to 21 and is staffed by dedicated, highly trained pediatric specialty physicians.
Emergency Sexual Assault Care
Mercy Medical Center is the designated treatment center for sexual assault and interpersonal violence in Baltimore City. We will arrange a transfer to Mercy for patients at UM Midtown who need care after an assault once they are medically cleared. Learn more about these services at bmoresafe.com.
