Transitional Year Program

Overview of Our Program

Residents of the Transitional Year program will contribute to a clinical learning environment that promotes wellness, supports the well-being of colleagues and peers, nurtures the education of future trainees, and encourages academic growth, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity. During their training, residents will contribute to the care of patients who reside in under-served communities and experience health-related disparities in their care.

Graduates of the Transitional Year program will be ready for pursue future specialty training of their choice, and ultimately achieve their individual professional goals. Graduates will build upon the skills, knowledge, and experiences gained during their Transitional Year training to continue to:

• Pursue scholarly activities
• Participate in performance and quality improvement
• Embrace leadership opportunities as they arise
• Sustain a career distinguished by lifelong learning, deliver high quality evidence-based care in a compassionate manner
• Interact collegially with staff, and communicate with colleagues and patients in a style characterized by professionalism and humanism.

Mission

The mission of the University of Maryland Medical Center, is to provide health care services on its two campuses for the Baltimore community, the State of Maryland and the nation. The mission of the Transitional Year residency program is completely aligned with that of the sponsoring institution: to train skilled, compassionate, and self-motivated physicians in a supportive environment that nurtures their professional and personal growth. We seek to train physicians from diverse backgrounds to become advocates for their patients, for quality improvement of the systems of care in which they practice, for scientific inquiry and investigation, and for a career characterized by professionalism and life-long learning. The Transitional Year program will provide trainees with the clinical knowledge and experiences to succeed in their future specialty training.
