Notable stats: What it takes to administer almost a quarter of a million doses
BALTIMORE - One of the country's highest profile mass vaccination sites closes tomorrow after delivering nearly a quarter of a million vaccine doses since opening its doors on February 25. The M&T Bank Stadium Mass Vaccination Site, a historic partnership between the University of Maryland Medical System, the Maryland Department of Health, the Maryland National Guard, and the Maryland Stadium Authority, with support from the Baltimore Ravens, received national and international recognition during its four-month run as a model example of America's use of sports stadiums for mass vaccination sites.
At its peak, the M&T Bank Stadium Mass Vaccination Site vaccinated over 6,000 people a day, and at one point, broke a state record for mass vaccination sites when clinical staff vaccinated over 1,000 people in an hour. The youngest patient vaccinated was 12 years old; the oldest patient vaccinated was 103 years-old.
"The state of Maryland showed great foresight in lining up the right partners and site to help meet the initial crush of demand for the COVID vaccine. There is no doubt that the large volume of vaccines administered at the M&T Bank Stadium Mass Vaccination Site significantly contributed to turning the page on the pandemic in Maryland," said Jason Marx, MD, a physician leader at the University of Maryland Medical System and Incident Commander at the M&T Bank Stadium Mass Vaccination Site.
The site opened with a visit by Governor Larry Hogan and received memorable visits over the next several months by Vice President Kamala Harris, Anthony Fauci, MD, Director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, and several members of Congress. In perhaps the most publicized moment, a “bride” wore her wedding reception gown to the site, garnering media attention and social media buzz around the world.

"The M&T Bank Stadium mass vaccination site was beyond successful in delivering life-saving vaccines to tens of thousands of Marylanders," said Maryland Department of Health Secretary Dennis R. Schrader. "As one of the cornerstones of our immense vaccination infrastructure, the facility greatly exceeded our expectations."
The University of Maryland Medical System is leading COVID vaccination initiatives on several fronts. The System and its member organizations have co-managed multiple mass vaccination sites, including the sites at M&T Bank Stadium, the Baltimore Convention Center Field Hospital, the Southern Center for students at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, Glenarden Baptist Church, Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium and Regency Furniture Stadium. It was also the first health system in the state to provide in-patient vaccination and has deployed mobile vaccination clinics throughout Maryland. All told, UMMS has directly contributed to over 630,000 vaccinations as a health system.
