The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) has received recognition from Vizient, Inc., the nation's largest health care performance improvement company, for accomplishments in supplier diversity.

UMMS was recognized as a top performer in the 2022 Vizient Supplier Diversity Award for a second year in a row as the top performer among comprehensive academic medical institutions as a champion of inclusion and diversity in its supply chain efforts. Vizient recognized UMMS for diversifying its supply chain through engagement, empowerment and utilization of minority, women, LGBT, veteran and disability-owned business enterprises.

Vizient counts among its membership 97% of academic medical centers in the United States.

"As an academic health system based in Baltimore, it is important that our vendors reflect the people we serve," said Mohan Suntha, MD, MBA, President and CEO of UMMS. "We remain committed to supporting underserved populations in our communities."

Selection criteria for the Supplier Diversity Award is based on contract purchases with minority-owned businesses as a percentage of a member's Vizient spend. This year, 169 Vizient member hospitals were divided into four cohorts and scoring for the awards was based on purchasing data from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022.

"It is with great pleasure that we recognize UMMS as a top performer in Supplier Diversity Excellence," said Simrit Sandhu, executive vice president, Vizient. "By creating new opportunities for diverse suppliers, especially those in the local community, it strengthens the overall supply chain and improves the health of the local economy. We are excited to celebrate the work of the System in this area."
