At the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute we take care of the entire spectrum of pediatric orthopedic problems from birth to skeletal maturity (teenagers).

Our pediatric orthopedic surgeons are experts in treating disorders of growth and development of the skeleton, muscles, and joints in children. They have had an extra year of training (fellowship) in this area of expertise. With their knowledge and understanding of normal growth and development, they are able to differentiate abnormal patterns or growth from normal variations. Thus, they are able to effectively interpret, diagnose, and treat skeletal abnormalities in children and adolescents.

We also understand that managing the child is different from the adult, not just as a result of physical differences, but also due to differences in social and emotional development. We appreciate the fact that the parents of a child, and the nurturing relationship between a child and their family are equally important elements in the overall orthopaedic care and treatment of the patient. Our staff members try to incorporate many other unique aspects of a child's life, such as school, religion, and individual interests, into the overall treatment process.

Our pediatric orthopedists take care of many congenital and developmental problems of the young skeleton such as clubfeet and dislocated hips as well as acute and chronic injuries to bones, joints, and muscles. In addition, our staff are experts in the care of various neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and muscular dystrophy.

Common problems such as flat-feet, knock-knees, bow-legs and in-toeing gait can often be part of the developmental spectrum, but an orthopedic evaluation and parental reassurance of the normalcy of the condition is provided by University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute specialists. Treatment is started if the problem can be improved through special shoes, braces or surgery.

We specialize in all aspects of spinal care for children covering the full spectrum of problems including congenital and acquired scoliosis, injury, infection, and tumors. We also provide state-of-the-art care for many congenital spinal problems due to birth defects in spinal bone and spinal cord formation, which often leads to neurologic problems or spine deformities such as scoliosis at an early age.

We also treat benign tumors of bone, any skeletal deformities, and inflammatory conditions such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, as well as deformity in children.
