Blood Flow Restriction Therapy
Blood Flow Restriction in physical therapy involves the application of inflatable cuffs on the affected extremity. This technique offers numerous therapeutic benefits for patients of all ages and activity levels.
By applying an inflatable cuff to a patient’s arm or leg, our experts can limit the amount of blood flow to and from the extremity. This creates metabolic stress in the limb. and when combined with low-intensity exercise, the affected area is strengthened.
Patients gain muscle mass exercising at significantly lower intensities while being closely monitored by a physical therapist.
Is Blood Flow Restriction Therapy Right for You?
Patients unable to generate strength gains through traditional training are best fit for this treatment. This can be due to pain, age, and fatigue or other factors.
Doppler technology ensures blood flow is not fully occluded when the cuff is applied.
Blood flow restriction may not be appropriate if a patient has history of:
- History of DVT
- Pregnancy
- Varicose Veins
- High Blood Pressure
- Cardiac Disease
- Lymphedema
