Volunteer with Chester River Hospital Center Auxiliary

The Chester River Hospital Center Auxiliary was founded on December 29, 1958, "to promote the advancement of all interests pertaining to the hospital, including social services and raising funds for the benefit of the hospital." Annually, the Auxiliary's volunteers give more than 12,000 hours of time and talent to the hospital for the benefit of the patients in the community.

In-House Volunteers

Volunteers provide assistance in many areas of the hospital. They aid nurses and other hospital staff by performing messenger duties, patient and specimen transportation and general office support in various departments. In-House volunteers staff the waiting room for the families of surgical patients, working as liaison between the surgical staff and family members. Our volunteers also do COVID screening for those entering the hospital. Volunteer shifts are 8 am-12 noon and 12 noon-4 pm Monday through Thursday.

Gift Shop

The Gift Shop, located in UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown, is one of the Auxiliary's sources of raising funds for the benefit of the hospital. The Shop, opened in 1965, is operated and staffed by Auxiliary volunteers and offers a variety of gifts, jewelry, books, cards, seasonal decorative items and snacks. One volunteer is on duty for each shift. Volunteer duties include: assisting customers, ringing up sales, stocking shelves, tidying up the Shop and assisting with year-end inventory.

As of July 2022, shop hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Call 410-778-3300, ext. 2351, to confirm current shop hours.

Nearly New Shop

The Nearly New Shop is the Auxiliary's second retail establishment, which is managed and staffed by Auxiliary volunteers. The Shop accepts donations of and resells gently used adult clothing, shoes and household items. Items not accepted include: electrical appliances, books and children's clothing.

Located in downtown Chestertown at 320 High Street, the Shop has been a part of the community since 1958, and is proud to be the oldest retail store in continuous operation in the local area.

Volunteers assist by sorting, tagging and displaying donated merchandise, as well as staffing the store during business hours. The Nearly New Shop is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-4pm, and on Saturday from 9am-1pm. Donations to the Shop are accepted on Tuesdays only, between 10am-2pm.
