Palliative Care medicine is a medical specialty that focuses on symptoms of chronic and serious advanced illnesses. These symptoms include your physical symptoms, but also anxiety, stress, coping skills and much more. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and their families.
University of Maryland Shore Regional Health’s palliative outpatient program is offered by expert physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists and social workers. The outpatient team works with each patient in tandem with family members and loved ones, primary care physicians and other medical professionals to manage his or her illness in an outpatient setting.
Patients are assisted with treatment and illness management for chronic and serious health conditions, understanding the disease process, complicated decision making regarding treatment options, planning for future care (advance care planning), pain and symptom management and coping with the debilitating effects of serious and chronic health conditions.
Inpatient palliative care is offered at UM Shore Medical Centers at Chestertown, Dorchester and Easton and The Requard Rehabilitation Center for Acute Rehabilitation in UM Shore Medical Center at Easton. Patients may request or be recommended for an assessment for a palliative care consult through their attending physician or nurse practitioner.
