Medical Oncology and Hematology
Medical Oncology and Hematology at UM St. Joseph Medical Center provides a seamless continuum of patient-centered medical care. Our medical oncologists work closely with surgeons, radiation oncologists and specialized cancer nurses to provide care that is effective, individualized and supports your well-being.
Our medical oncologists provide treatment for patients in the hospital and on an outpatient basis, and remain available throughout the cancer journey. They:
- Treat the patient, not just the diagnosis, helping provide psycho-social care as needed
- Work with the patient's health care team, coordinating such support services as nutrition counseling, financial counseling, spiritual support, genetics counseling and ostomy/wound care, when needed
When patients no longer respond to curative treatment, medical oncologists help patients and their families decide on and choose hospice or palliative care for symptom management, and assist with engaging the hospital's spiritual care resources, if requested, so that each patient is as comfortable as possible.
There are also a multitude of support services available for our patients such as:
- Nurse Navigation
- Genetic Counseling
- Nutrition Counseling
- Counseling and wellness support for patients and family
- Pastoral/Spiritual Care
