Sleep Disorders
UM SJMG – Pulmonary Care and Sleep Medicine diagnoses and treats a wide range of sleep disorders, including:
- Sleep apnea (common condition in which your breathing stops and restarts while you sleep)
- Upper airway resistance syndrome
- Insomnia (trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting good quality sleep)
- Restless leg syndrome (a neurological disorder that causes unpleasant or uncomfortable sensations in your legs and an urge to move them)
- Narcolepsy (chronic neurological disorder that affects the brain's ability to control sleep-wake cycles)
Sleep Study
Also called polysomnography, a sleep study is a painless test that evaluates how well you sleep, measuring body functions such as:
- Blood oxygen
- Brain waves
- Breathing rate
- Eye movements
- Heart rate
- Leg movements

Home Sleep Study
This patient-led test, done in your home, monitors breathing during sleep, helping us diagnose sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.
In-Lab Sleep Study
Overnight studies in our Sleep Center are performed in a safe, comfortable environment and monitored by a licensed sleep technologist.
Sleep Disorder Treatment
After patient questionnaires, consultations and sleep studies, we typically recommend an individualized treatment plan that may include:
- Changes in behavior to improve sleep
- Sleep apnea treatment (may involve use of an implantable device)
- CPAP and BiPAP therapy management
- Sleep medications
