7 East & 7 West

Departmental Scope of Services

7East is a beautiful 20-bed inpatient oncology/medical-surgical unit. The rooms were renovated in 2012 and were designed with patient comfort and safety in mind. Each room has space to accommodate families for overnight stays.

7West is a 24-bed inpatient medical-surgical unit which also specializes in the care of the oncology, GU, and GI patient. Nurses, physicians, and social workers collaborate with support services to provide an interdisciplinary approach to meet the care needs of the patient population across the continuum.

Types of Patients Served

The staff members provide care to adult (age 18 and older) oncology, medical, surgical, wound care, gastroenterology, and urology patients. Chemotherapy administration is an important component of our oncology unit and is given by chemotherapy certified registered nurses.

Overview of Department Services

The registered nurse completes the initial assessment. An interdisciplinary plan of care is developed with input and follow-up from the interdisciplinary care team as well as the inclusion of the patient and/or significant other in the plan of care when appropriate. Patient/significant other education is provided on an ongoing basis by members of the health care team to include medication instruction, disease process, pain control treatment, and discharge planning. Patients are routinely reassessed for their response to care and outcomes of care are evaluated on an ongoing basis by the health care team.

Staffing Model

Assignments are made each shift reflecting the degree of supervision required by each staff member, the patient’s needs, the technology required to deliver care and the geography of the unit. The nurse includes the family in the care of the patient and supports and educates not only the patient but the family as well.

The 7th floor is distinctive in that it collaborates with the outpatient Cancer Institute to provide comprehensive, quality oncology care by chemotherapy and oncology certified nurses which makes us the primary choice for cancer care and treatment.
