Departmental Scope of Services
The Childbirth and Family Education program provides education resources for families during the childbearing years.
Types of Patients Served
The nurse educators in Childbirth and Family Education work with all age groups and educational levels. We introduce young children expecting a new sibling to the hospital. Safe Sitter instructors work with middle school students who are interested in babysitting. Our nurses work in the community lecturing on reproduction and other topics in local elementary and high schools. We work with expectant parents, new parents and grandparents.
Overview of Department Services
We offer the following classes for the general community:
- Preparation for childbirth
- Baby care classes – newborn care, how to handle a choking infant and CPR for infants
- Breastfeeding class
- Sibling preparation class
- Grandparent Update
- Mothering Matters – a new mothers support group
- Infant Massage classes
- Safe Sitter – training for students 11 to 13 years old
We are available for lectures in school settings on topics including puberty, pregnancy and STD's.
Staffing Model
All family education staff are registered nurses that hold certifications in their area of educational expertise. The childbirth and family education staff are committed to providing quality education and resources to the community.
