Carmen and Vicki Deyesu, beloved benefactors and cherished friends of UM St. Joseph Medical Center.

University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center mourns the passing of a beloved benefactor of UM St. Joseph Medical Center and, most importantly, our cherished friend. Carmen F. Deyesu, a member of our Foundation Board and emeritus member of our Operating Board, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 25. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Vicki, who is also a treasured member of our St. Joe’s family.

In 1990, Sr. Marie Cecilia, OSF, then president and CEO of our hospital, made a most fortuitous choice when she asked her dear friend to consider joining St. Joe’s Operating Board. She rightly recognized that Carmen’s quiet strength and deep faith would be a tremendous asset to the leadership of the hospital.

For nearly 30 years, Carmen served UM St. Joseph Medical Center in every volunteer leadership capacity imaginable, including chair of the Operating and Foundation Boards. Carmen was our exemplar, personifying our tenets of reverence, integrity, compassion, excellence and stewardship in every role he undertook. He displayed leadership of the highest caliber as he steered St. Joe’s through both triumphant and difficult times. Carmen gave unsparingly of his time and treasure. The Deyesu family has touched every part of our hospital, supporting transformative capital projects and vital programs and services. Our Centers of Excellence would not be what they are today without the extraordinarily generous support of Carmen and Vicki Deyesu.

In remembering Carmen, we are reminded of Micah 6:8: “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” We grieve this good and humble man’s passing. We have been remarkably blessed that Carmen was our touchstone for so many years. We celebrate that he is now in God’s loving arms. Please keep Vicki and the entire Deyesu family in your prayers. Please join us as we celebrate the remarkable life of Carmen Deyesu.
