University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center Named Among America’s 100 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades
For the second year in a row, Healthgrades, a leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals, has recognized University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center as among America's 100 Best HospitalsTM America's 100 Best Hospitals are in the top 2 percent of hospitals in the nation for exhibiting clinical excellence year over year and superior performance in 32 of the most common conditions and procedures.
"We are immensely proud of our sustained commitment to patient care and safety, which is improving outcomes and saving lives. There is no higher achievement than that," said Thomas B. Smyth, MD, President and CEO of UM St. Joseph Medical Center.
Smyth credits the hospital's Value Delivery System, based on the Toyota Production System, for this success. This management system drives the hospital's constant focus on safety, engaging staff to identify and address safety concerns immediately. "I am proud of the courage shown by our staff, who work tirelessly to break down the barriers—both real and perceived—endemic to healthcare in order to speak up for safety. Their vigilance is a daily affirmation of our goal of becoming a high-reliability health care organization," he said.
Nearly 4,500 hospitals across the nation were rated according to their performance across 32 conditions and procedures, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke. According to Healthgrades, it has been shown that, overall, patients treated at these top hospitals have a 27.4 percent lower risk of dying than if treated in hospitals that did not receive this award—and if all hospitals performed at the same level of care as these Best Hospitals, 167,235 lives could potentially have been saved.
"Now more than ever, consumers understand the importance of researching hospitals and finding the best organization to meet their healthcare needs," said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades, in a statement issued by the organization. "Especially in this era of COVID-19, we commend the recipients of the Healthgrades America's Best Hospitals Awards for their commitment to providing superior outcomes and keeping their communities safe."
Healthgrades rated each of the nation's hospitals using hospital quality methodologies.
