For Immediate Release August 08, 2024

University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center (UM SJMC) was one of only 381 hospitals in the nation—and one of only two in the entire state of Maryland—to earn five out of five stars from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in its 2024 Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings report.

CMS created the Five-Star Quality Rating System to help consumers make informed decisions about where to go for healthcare. CMS assessed more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide, rating their performance in seven key areas: mortality, readmission, safety of care, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging.

This is the seventh time in a row that UM SJMC has received CMS’s highest rating, and the hospital is currently the only hospital in Maryland to have both a 5-Star CMS rating and a Grade ‘A’ for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization. “Our singular focus is the care and safety of our patients,” says Thomas B. Smyth, MD, president and chief executive officer at UM SJMC. “This superb rating from CMS speaks to our commitment to continuous improvement and our dedication to standardizing best-practice care processes that mean optimal outcomes and exceptional experiences for our patients. We’re proud of this accomplishment and honored to serve our community.”
