Gastric Bypass Surgery
Also known as the Roux en Y gastric bypass (RYGB), this procedure bypasses most of the stomach and first part of the small intestine where some calories from food are absorbed. During the procedure, the bariatric surgeon creates a small pouch from the upper part of your stomach, with the rest of the stomach being sealed off. The surgeon divides the small intestine and connects the lower end to the newly created stomach pouch. The procedure can result in significant weight loss by restricting the amount of nutrients that are absorbed.
At our Bariatric Surgery Center, a gastric bypass surgery is performed using a laparoscope rather than through a large open incision. The laparoscopic method allows the surgeon to make a series of much smaller incisions reducing abdominal pain and lowering the risk of wound infection and hernia.
