Colon Cancer Symptoms and Diagnosis

Colon cancer develops in the tissues of the colon or rectum and can cause symptoms that may include:

  • A change in bowel habits (such as diarrhea or constipation) that lasts for several days
  • Blood in your stool
  • Persisting abdominal pain and cramps
  • Unexpected weight loss

While these symptoms may also be caused by other health conditions, it is important to contact your doctor if you have these or other concerning issues. If your doctor suspects colon cancer, they will refer you to the Kaufman Cancer Center for further testing and consultation.

Diagnosing colon cancer generally involves a combination of patient history, physical exams, colonoscopy, biopsy and blood tests. Depending on individual patients and their results, other tests may also be recommended.

Colon Cancer Treatment

You and your doctors will discuss your options for care and develop a plan that is aligned with your needs and goals. Our providers will consider many factors to determine your best course of care, including type, stage and location of cancer, your overall health and your preferences.

While surgery is typically the most common treatment for all stages of colon cancer, your team may recommend other treatments, including:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Targeted therapy - drugs that specifically target cancer cells while preserving healthy ones
