Symptoms and Diagnosis

Head and neck cancer symptoms can vary. Common signs include a persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, lumps in the neck, unexplained weight loss, and ear pain. You might also notice mouth sores that don’t heal, nasal congestion, or bleeding from the mouth or nose. If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to seek medical attention early, as early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes.

Everyone should have a yearly physical exam of the head and neck conducted by their physician as well as yearly dental checkups that include examination of the mouth. For people considered high-risk for head and neck cancers, additional examinations may be necessary.

Head and neck cancers are diagnosed through a combination of physical exams and imaging tests. If needed, they may use an endoscope to look deeper into the throat or nose.

Imaging tests like CT, MRI, or PET scans can help identify the extent of the cancer. The most definitive diagnosis comes from a biopsy, where a tissue sample is taken for examination. These steps help determine the type and stage of cancer, allowing for the best possible treatment plan.
