UM Upper Chesapeake Health offers a lung cancer screening program that evaluates those considered at high risk for developing lung cancer from smoking.

Why Get a Lung Cancer Screening

Screening for lung cancer can help find cancer in its early stages, giving you a better chance of responding to treatment and living a healthy life after a cancer diagnosis.

Our non-invasive CT scan for lung cancer screening is “reduced dose,” using about 25% of the radiation exposure of a regular CT scan. The scan takes 15 minutes to complete.

We’re committed to high-quality, responsible screening practices, designated as a Lung Cancer Alliance Screening Center of Excellence.

Who Should Get Screened

Screening candidates include people age 50-80 who:

  • currently smoke or have quit less than 15 years ago
  • AND have smoked for a TOTAL of 20 pack-years (pack-years = number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day multiplied by TOTAL number of years smoking)
  • have no symptoms and have no history of lung cancer
