Preparing for a Sleep Evaluation
Our sleep specialists consult with each patient individually to determine the underlying disorder and what testing, such as a sleep evaluation, is indicated. Depending on the results of your evaluation, a personalized treatment plan will be developed just for you.
Preparing for a Sleep Evaluation
Sleep studies are conducted at night. You will be given a wake-up time so that you can plan your activities for the following morning. Please follow these instructions to prepare for your sleep test:
- Avoid alcohol the day of the study
- Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, cola, chocolate) after 2:00 pm on the day of your study
- Ask your doctor if you should discontinue any medications prior to the study
- Do not nap
- Before arriving, wash and dry your hair and do not apply any hairsprays, oils or gels
- Bring a bag packed as you would for an overnight stay at a hotel or friend’s house
What to Expect During and After a Sleep Evaluation
Your sleep test will be conducted by a sleep technologist in our comfortable and homelike bedroom setting. The technologist will show you the equipment and explain the procedure. He or she will be in a separate room during the testing. Recording sensors are placed on your skin and are used to track body functions, including brain wave activity, breathing, heart rate, blood oxygen concentration, muscle activity, eye movement, snoring and body position. You may also be asked to wear a mask that fits around your nose and mouth.
After the sleep study, our sleep specialists will analyze and interpret the recorded data. Our specialist will share the results and treatment recommendations directly with your doctor. You will need to schedule a visit with your doctor to discuss the results and next steps.
