Treatments and Technologies
At the University of Maryland, our radiation oncologists have pioneered new radiation treatment technologies, such as the GammaPod, for early-stage breast cancer. One of our widely-used precision treatment options is stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), which pinpoints tumors with higher doses of radiation delivered in fewer treatment sessions while sparing nearby normal cells.
For patients with liver cancer, we have one of the most experienced selective internal radiation therapy centers in the country. We also offer brachytherapy, which safely delivers radiation from a source implanted into a tumor. At both the University of Maryland Medical Center and Maryland Proton Treatment Center, we provide hyperthermia therapy, which uses gentle heat before treatment to improve radiation therapy results.

Our radiation oncologists are experts at treating recurrent cancers, often with a combination of treatments including proton therapy and hyperthermia.
The Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC) offers advanced pencil beam scanning proton therapy. MPTC's expert physicians are different, with more than 50 years of combined proton therapy experience treating all types of cancer. MPTC is the only health care center in Maryland to offer proton therapy and hyperthermia under one roof.
As of 2024, the linear accelerator at the University of Maryland Medical Center is the first in the state to be equipped with the latest in tumor imaging technology. This means sharper and clearer images of the tumor site for even greater precision during targeted treatments.
