Emily Wein is Vice President and General Counsel for the University of Maryland Medical Center's Downtown and Midtown campuses. As a member of the UMMC senior leadership and University of Maryland Medical System's overall legal team, Ms. Wein provides legal and strategic counsel to the Medical Center's leadership, management and Board of Directors on regulatory, transactional and operational matters.

Since 2003, Ms. Wein has focused her legal practice on health care law. Previously she was a member of the System's Office of General Counsel between 2009 and 2013 during which time she supported the legal needs of all System hospitals. During the other points of her legal career, she practiced within two large firms within their nationally recognized health law departments, Baker Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell and Berkowitz (formerly Ober, Kaler, Grimes and Shriver) in Baltimore and Foley and Lardner in Washington DC. During her private practice tenure, Ms. Win represented hospitals and hospital systems including academic medical systems across the country. Her areas of focus have included fraud and abuse compliance, HIPAA privacy and security, Medicare enrollment and state licensure matters. During the most recent years of private practice at Foley and Lardner, Ms. Wein focused her practice on telehealth and became one of the national experts in this area in the course of serving clients and publicly speaking across the country.

After receiving her undergraduate degree from Villanova University, Ms. Wein earned her law degree and Masters of Business Administration from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Of note, during the year between finishing her undergraduate studies and beginning law school, she worked as a Child Life Therapy assistant at the Maryland Children's Hospital at the Medical Center.
