From rare head and neck cancers to everyday ailments like ear infections and sinusitis, the medical specialty of ear, nose and throat (otorhinolaryngology) sees it all. However, individual ENT doctors do not necessarily see it all — rather they may specialize in particular conditions or treatments.

That's why at UMMC we have cultivated an extensive team of ENT specialists with different skills and specialties but the same desire to collaborate across disciplines to bring comprehensive care to our patients.

Nose and Sinus Conditions

While chronic sinusitis may be treated medically, in some cases our specialist may recommend sinus surgery. Another minimally invasive technology for chronic sinus inflammation is balloon sinuplasty, a system that uses a small catheter and balloon to open blocked sinuses.

Other nasal surgeries include correction of a deviated septum and rhinoplasty, also commonly known as a nose job, a surgical procedure that alters the appearance of the nose.

Voice and Swallowing Disorders

The larynx, sometimes called the voice box, does more than produce sound. It regulates the intersection of the respiratory and digestive tracts; thereby also controlling swallowing and breathing. Laryngology is the study and treatment of conditions that affect the larynx, such as:

• Airway disorders
• Swallowing disorders
• Voice disorders

Head and Neck Surgery

As an academic medical center with a commitment to innovation, UMMC is able to integrate the latest medical technology into its treatments.

In head and neck surgery, this includes real-time nerve monitoring for complex procedures such as thyroid and parathyroid surgery or robotic surgery for head and neck cancer.

Sore Throats and Ear Infections

Ear infections and strep throat are some of the most common ear, nose and throat ailments. Both of these are medically treatable with antibiotics. However, when they become chronic, surgeries, such as the implantation of tubes for ear infections or tonsillectomy for sore throats, may be recommended.

Allergies

We treat environmental allergies with allergy immunotherapy. The University of Maryland Children's Hospital pulmonary, allergy and sleep medicine team offers allergen immunotherapy and other allergy treatments for pediatric patients.

Hearing and Balance

Our ENT doctors work closely with the audiologists at the UM Hearing and Balance Center in evaluating and treating hearing disorders with technologies such as cochlear implants and bone-anchored hearing aids.

Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Working with the Sleep Disorders Center at University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus, our specialists can help you find relief from sleep apnea using pillar implants for snoring.
