What is Endovascular Surgery?
In the past, patients with complex heart and blood vessel problems needed open surgery in order to repair the problem.
Experts at the University of Maryland Heart and Vascular Center specialize in endovascular surgery, a minimally invasive approach to heart procedures.
We are committed to using the least invasive approach for our patients, leading to a shorter recovery and faster return to regular activities.
Endovascular Surgery at the University of Maryland
We are committed to giving you the least invasive procedure possible. Our team regularly uses an endovascular approach to repair cardiovascular problems, giving us a high level of expertise with these procedures.
Our specialized team includes interventional cardiologists and vascular surgeons who have extensive experience performing endovascular procedures.
We perform endovascular repairs for all types of patients, even those with complex, difficult-to-treat conditions.
Many of our patients have multiple medical conditions and may not be able to undergo a traditional surgery, but we can successfully treat them using an endovascular repair.
Endovascular Surgery: What to Expect
Traditional open surgery involves making a large incision on the chest and placing you on a heart-lung bypass machine. During an endovascular procedure, we avoid a large chest incision. Instead, we use small incisions, often using the artery near your groin as an access point.
Most patients only need to stay in the hospital one night. You can most likely return to your daily activities in about a week.
Benefits of Endovascular Surgery
One of the major advantages of endovascular surgery is the use of smaller incisions instead of a large chest incision. Other benefits include:
- Less scarring
- Fewer complications
- Faster recovery and faster return to normal activities
- Less discomfort
We can repair many heart problems with an endovascular approach, even in emergency situations. However, in some cases, we may decide that a traditional, open approach will offer you the optimal results. Our goal is always your best outcome and long-term health. No matter which approach we choose, our team has the expertise and resources to perform a successful surgery.
