Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is an image-guided, minimally invasive procedure for treating uterine fibroid tumors, the most common non-cancerous tumors in women of childbearing age.

Uterine fibroids develop in the muscle wall of the uterus. The cause of fibroids is unknown, and they don’t always have symptoms. But their size and location can lead to problems and symptoms in some women that may include:

  • Heavy or painful periods or bleeding between periods
  • Feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen
  • Frequent urination
  • Pain during sex
  • Lower back pain
  • Infertility, multiple miscarriages or early labor

During Uterine Fibroid Embolization

UFE is an image-guided, minimally invasive procedure that uses high-definition fluoroscopy — which shows real-time, moving X-ray images — and a catheter (a small tube). One of our interventional radiologists guides the catheter into the uterine arteries to deliver medication that blocks flow through the blood vessels, causing the fibroids to shrink.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization Benefits

If you are past childbearing age, or no longer wish to become pregnant, UFE is a less-invasive option to hysterectomy. Benefits of UFE include:

  • UFE uses local anesthesia and is less invasive than open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, or hysterectomy.
  • No surgical incision is needed, which results in less pain and faster recovery.
  • UFE is a more permanent solution than hormonal therapy. Most women experience almost or complete relief from uterine fibroid symptoms.

UFE Recovery

You may stay one night in the hospital after uterine fibroid embolization. There are usually few side effects and complications from UFE. You may resume light activities in a few days. Your doctor will tell you when you can return to normal activities. This is usually within 4 to 7 days.
