Multiple Sclerosis
The University of Maryland's Center for Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research is committed to providing an accurate diagnosis and the highest level of long-term care for individuals with MS.
We do all of this while maintaining a long-standing tradition of groundbreaking research.
We work closely with patients, families and primary care physicians to develop treatment plans that help patients manage their conditions effectively so they can lead active, productive lives.
Our center is recognized by the National MS Society as a Center for Comprehensive MS Care and is a member of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers. The center is dedicated to continuing its role as a leader in innovative research programs. Our goal is to find effective therapies and eventually cure or prevent MS.
Multiple Sclerosis Patient Services
- Complete Patient History and Neurological Examination: A neurologist dedicated to patient care and MS research sees each new patient for an extensive history and physical examination. The cause of neurological symptoms is evaluated carefully, utilizing the latest in technology.
- Diagnostic Services: Innovating and recent technology is available to assist the neurologist in the diagnosis and management of multiple sclerosis. This includes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and laboratory testing performed on blood and spinal fluid samples.
- Infusion Services: Often intravenous medications are prescribed for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Infusion services are provided in the neurology infusion suite in our Ambulatory Center.
- Nursing Care: Our nurses are primary sources of contact for our patients for medical concerns. A team of nurses specializing in multiple sclerosis care is available to provide education regarding the disease, its treatment, symptom management and dealing with side effects.
- Administrative Support: The administrative team will work to schedule you for any appointments and testing that you may require. Our administrative team also works to coordinate initiation of MS treatments and obtaining of insurance authorizations for your treatment and testing.
- Rehabilitation: Physical and occupational therapy, neuropsychology/cognitive rehabilitation, speech therapy and assessment of swallowing problems are available through the center. We have a strong link with the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Institute, where expert physicians and therapists specializing in neurologic disease can provide both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation.
- Multidisciplinary Services: Caring for multiple sclerosis patients relies on the skills of numerous specialists. Other medical services are available for our patients, such as urology, urogynecology, neuro-ophthalmology, psychology and psychiatry.
