For Referring Physicians - Multiple Sclerosis
One-Time Neurologic Consultations
The staff of the University of Maryland's Center for Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research provides one-time consultations to neurologists and other providers. Reasons for such consultations would include any of the following:
- Evaluation of patients with unexplained symptoms or radiological findings which could be due to demyelinating disease.
- Confirmation of the diagnosis of MS where work-up is already complete.
- Review of treatment options in relapsing-remitting patients.
- Review of new immunomodulating therapies for MS.
- Review of difficult management issues such as pregnancy or surgery.
- Review of treatment options for secondary progressive patients.
- Review of immunosuppressive therapies for MS including azathioprine, cladribine, cyclophosphamide, intravenous immunoglobulin, methotrexate and mitoxantrone.
- Review of the management of treatable MS symptoms such as ataxia, bowel and bladder dysfunction, fatigue pain, spasticity and weakness.

Short-Term Neurologic Consultations
Our staff provides short-term consultations to neurologist and other providers. Reasons for such consultations would include any of the following
- Evaluation of patients with unexplained symptoms or radiological findings which could be due to demyelinating disease.
- Confirmation of the diagnosis of MS when further work-up is required.
- Review of management options with the patient and initiation of treatment with long-term follow-up to be provided by the referring physician.
Short-Term Neurorehabilitation Consultations
The staff of the Maryland Center for Multiple Sclerosis provide short-term neurorehabilitation consultations to neurologists and other physicians. Reasons for such consultations would include the evaluation and management of any of the following:
- Gait disturbance
- Spasticity
- Ataxia
- Upper extremity impairment
- Impaired speech and swallowing
Long-Term Neurologic and Neurorehabilitative Care
The staff of the Maryland Center for Multiple Sclerosis will assume the long-term care responsibility in some circumstances for MS patients referred specifically for this by neurologists or other providers.
